Istanbul

from €125.00

It was June 2019 and I was on a day-long flight layover between Afghanistan, where I was working for a humanitarian organisation at the time, and the Netherlands. I was only a month into working in Afghanistan and had already had to deal with the trauma and suffering caused by the Taliban at close quarters. Having a day-long layover can sound tiresome but for me it was an opportunity to take a deep breath and mull over how different cultures and contexts can seem so diametrically opposed to each other. Istanbul is a city at the interface of two continents. Old and modern.

In the foreground are the chimneys and dome-shaped rooftops of the Suleymaniye Hamam (designed and built between 1550 and 1557) and the famous Galata Tower in the mid-background surrounded by 20th century modern tower blocks.

This image captures, for me, the juxtaposition I was experiencing between life in Afghanistan and Europe in the 21st century.
