Monte Rosa
Monte Rosa is often mentioned as the second highest mountain in Western Europe (after Mont Blanc). The reality is, however, that Monte Rosa is a massif which contains over 10 separate summits over 4000m with one of them, Dufourspitze at 4634m claiming the prize of the second highest.
The entire massif is gargantuan. You can easily read more about the massif online. For me, the enormity of the massif is best viewed from the southern Italian side, part of which contains the highest mountain wall of the Alps.
I took this photo a shade under 40 kilometres away, so that tells you something!
What are men to rocks and mountains? Oh! what hours of transport we shall spend! And when we do return, it shall not be like other travellers, without being able to give one accurate idea of any thing. We will know where we have gone—we will recollect what we have seen. Lakes, mountains, and rivers shall not be jumbled together in our imaginations… Jane Austen - Pride and Prejudice
